Here's an interesting anecdote about The Police that you may not have heard before: Sting says that their song "Walking On The Moon" was originally written as "Walking Around The Room".
Seriously. he wasn't thinking about the moon, he came up with it when he was literally pacing around a hotel room. he says, quote, "I woke and had that bass riff in my head, and started walking around the room."
Sting has talked about this before. in a biography on the police that was published back in the '80s, he elaborated a little more: quote, "I was drunk in a hotel room in Munich, slumped on the bed . . . when this riff came into my head.
"I got up and starting walking 'round the room singing: 'Walking Around The Room, Walking Around The Room.' that was all. in the cool light of morning I remembered what had happened and I wrote the riff down.
"But 'Walking Around The Room' was a stupid title so I thought of something even more stupid which was 'Walking On The Moon'."
Sting has since said that he's come to think of "walking on the moon" as a metaphor for the feeling of weightlessness that comes with being in love.
